In 1921, as post-war treaties forced the transfer of West Hungarian territories to Austria, armed resistance erupted along the frontier. Among the most famous irregular formations was the Rongyos Gárda, or “Ragged Guard,” a volunteer force of former soldiers, students and patriots determined to oppose the new border. Fighting in skirmishes and local actions, these insurgents became one of the most striking symbols of the West Hungarian Uprising. Their resistance helped create the conditions that led to the Venice agreement and, later, the Sopron plebiscite of December 1921.

1921-ben, amikor a háború utáni békeszerződések Nyugat-Magyarország egy részének Ausztriához csatolását írták elő, fegyveres ellenállás bontakozott ki a határvidéken. A legismertebb irreguláris alakulatok közé tartozott a Rongyos Gárda, egy önkéntes csapat volt katonákból, diákokból és hazafiakból, akik az új határ ellen léptek fel. Összecsapásokban és helyi harcokban váltak a nyugat-magyarországi felkelés egyik legjellegzetesebb jelképévé. Ellenállásuk hozzájárult ahhoz, hogy megszülessen a velencei egyezmény, majd sor kerüljön az 1921. decemberi soproni népszavazásra.
