ENGLISH In the summer of 1936, after the military uprising against the Spanish Republic, thousands of volunteers joined Republican militias to defend cities, roads and front lines across Spain. Drawn from political parties, trade unions and workers’ organisations, these men and women became some of the most recognisable figures of the opening phase of the Spanish Civil War. Often wearing a mixture of civilian clothes and improvised military equipment, the militiamen embodied the urgency, idealism and chaos of a country at war. By 1937, many of these formations had been absorbed into the new Popular Army of the Republic. ESPAÑOL En el verano de 1936, tras la sublevación militar contra la República española, miles de voluntarios se incorporaron a las milicias republicanas para defender ciudades, carreteras y líneas de frente en toda España. Procedentes de partidos políticos, sindicatos y organizaciones obreras, estos hombres y mujeres se convirtieron en algunas de las figuras más reconocibles de la primera fase de la Guerra Civil española. A menudo vestidos con una mezcla de ropa civil y equipo militar improvisado, los milicianos encarnaban la urgencia, el idealismo y el caos de un país en guerra. En 1937, muchas de estas formaciones quedaron integradas en el nuevo Ejército Popular de la República.
