On 27 June 1976, Air France Flight 139 was hijacked and diverted to Entebbe Airport in Uganda. Israeli and Jewish passengers were separated from many of the other hostages and held inside the old terminal while negotiations continued. In the night of 3–4 July, Israeli commandos flew thousands of kilometres to Uganda and launched a surprise rescue operation. Most of the hostages were freed in a matter of minutes, while several hijackers, Ugandan soldiers, hostages and the assault-force commander Yonatan Netanyahu were killed. Entebbe became one of the most famous hostage-rescue operations of the twentieth century.

ב־27 ביוני 1976 נחטפה טיסת אייר פראנס 139 והוסטה לנמל התעופה אנטבה שבאוגנדה. נוסעים ישראלים ויהודים הופרדו מרבים מבני הערובה האחרים והוחזקו בטרמינל הישן בזמן שהתנהל משא ומתן. בלילה שבין 3 ל־4 ביולי טס כוח קומנדו ישראלי אלפי קילומטרים לאוגנדה ופתח במבצע חילוץ מפתיע. רוב בני הערובה חולצו בתוך דקות, בעוד שכמה מן החוטפים, חיילים אוגנדים, בני ערובה ומפקד כוח הפריצה יונתן נתניהו נהרגו. אנטבה הפך לאחד ממבצעי חילוץ בני הערובה המפורסמים ביותר של המאה העשרים.
