ENGLISH

Founded in 1927 as an organisation for decorated French veterans of the First World War, the Croix-de-Feu grew dramatically during the political turmoil of the 1930s. Under Colonel François de La Rocque, it developed into a mass movement promoting patriotism, national unity, discipline and a stronger state. Its uniformed gatherings and organised demonstrations made it one of the most visible political organisations of interwar France. Present during the crisis of 6 February 1934, the movement continued to expand until the Croix-de-Feu was dissolved in 1936.
