ENGLISH Born in Britain in the late 1960s, the skinhead subculture emerged from working-class youth culture and the influence of Jamaican music, fashion and the Rude Boy scene. Close-cropped hair, boots, braces and sharply defined street style created an instantly recognisable identity, while ska and reggae provided much of its early soundtrack. Over the following decades, the movement divided into very different currents. Some became associated with nationalism and far-right politics, while others remained apolitical, multiracial or openly anti-racist. More than a single ideology, the history of the skinheads reflects a complex and often controversial chapter of British youth culture.
