In the summer of 1940, defeated France entered a new and troubled era. With the establishment of the Vichy regime, the police became an instrument of a state determined to control public life, monitor political opposition and enforce its new laws. As collaboration with Nazi Germany developed, repression would become increasingly severe. Behind the familiar uniform now stood the authority of a radically transformed regime. This set portrays the French police at the beginning of one of the darkest and most controversial periods in modern French history.

À l’été 1940, la France vaincue entre dans une période nouvelle et troublée. Avec l’installation du régime de Vichy, la police devient l’un des instruments d’un État déterminé à contrôler la vie publique, surveiller les oppositions politiques et faire appliquer ses nouvelles lois. À mesure que la collaboration avec l’Allemagne nazie se développe, la répression s’intensifie. Derrière un uniforme familier se trouve désormais l’autorité d’un régime profondément transformé. Cette boîte représente la police française au début de l’une des périodes les plus sombres et controversées de l’histoire contemporaine française.
