ENGLISH

In 1861 and 1862, as the American Civil War began, companies of volunteers from Mississippi answered the Confederate call to arms. Drawn from towns, farms and local communities, these men entered the war in its opening phase, bringing with them civilian clothing, early-war equipment and the fierce regional identity that marked so many Southern regiments.

Before the long exhaustion of the later war years, these first volunteers embodied the spirit of the Confederacy at its beginning — eager, determined and often inexperienced. In camp, on the march and in the first battles of the conflict, Mississippi’s Confederate volunteers became part of the fighting force that would shape the war in the Western and Eastern theatres alike.

This set portrays the early Confederate volunteers of Mississippi during the opening years of the American Civil War.
