On 1 September 1939, as war erupted across Europe, the Polish Post Office in the Free City of Danzig became the scene of one of the first armed clashes of the Second World War. Polish postal workers, prepared to defend the building, resisted repeated German assaults for more than fourteen hours. Only after the attackers set the building on fire were the surviving defenders forced to surrender. Their stand became one of the enduring symbols of Polish resistance in the opening hours of the war.

1 września 1939 roku, w chwili wybuchu wojny w Europie, Poczta Polska w Wolnym Mieście Gdańsku stała się miejscem jednego z pierwszych starć zbrojnych II wojny światowej. Polscy pocztowcy, przygotowani do obrony budynku, przez ponad czternaście godzin odpierali kolejne niemieckie ataki. Dopiero podpalenie gmachu zmusiło ocalałych obrońców do kapitulacji. Ich walka stała się jednym z trwałych symboli polskiego oporu w pierwszych godzinach wojny.
