After the German invasion of the Soviet Union in 1941, thousands of men and women took up arms behind enemy lines. Operating from forests, villages and hidden camps, Soviet partisans ambushed patrols, sabotaged railways, destroyed bridges and gathered intelligence for the Red Army. Often fighting with limited supplies and captured weapons, they forced the occupiers to defend an increasingly dangerous rear. By 1944, partisan warfare had become an important part of the struggle on the Eastern Front.

После нападения Германии на Советский Союз в 1941 году тысячи мужчин и женщин взялись за оружие в тылу врага. Действуя из лесов, деревень и скрытых лагерей, советские партизаны устраивали засады, подрывали железные дороги и мосты, а также собирали разведывательные сведения для Красной армии. Часто испытывая нехватку снабжения и используя трофейное оружие, они превращали немецкий тыл во всё более опасную зону. К 1944 году партизанская борьба стала важной частью войны на Восточном фронте.
