ENGLISH

In 1917, as the Russian Army was shaken by defeat, exhaustion and revolution, a new and extraordinary formation was created: the Women’s Battalion of Death. Organised under the leadership of Maria Bochkareva, these volunteers were intended to inspire the army through discipline, patriotism and personal courage at a time when morale was collapsing across the front.

Drawn from different social backgrounds, the women underwent military training and were sent into active service during the final months of Imperial Russia’s war effort. Their story remains one of the most unusual and striking episodes of the First World War and the Russian Revolution.

This set portrays the women who entered battle in one of the most dramatic moments of 1917.
