ENGLISH

From the campaigns of 1940 to the final battles of 1945, many British soldiers experienced the war not only on the battlefield, but also in captivity. Captured in France, North Africa, Greece, Crete, Asia and other theatres of war, they were disarmed, searched and sent to temporary enclosures, transit camps and prisoner-of-war camps far from home.

For some, captivity lasted months; for others, years. Their daily lives were marked by boredom, discipline, shortages, uncertainty and the constant hope of release or liberation.

This set portrays British prisoners of war at the moment when fighting had ended for them, but hardship had not.
