ENGLISH Behind the battle lines of the American Civil War, Confederate field hospitals became places of urgency, suffering and endurance. Surgeons, assistants, nurses, stewards and wounded soldiers crowded into tents, farm buildings, churches and improvised medical stations, where operations were performed under pressure and often with very limited supplies. Amid blood, exhaustion and constant arrivals from the battlefield, medical staff worked to dress wounds, amputate shattered limbs, ease pain and keep the wounded alive. These hospitals were harsh and imperfect places, yet they stood at the centre of the struggle to save men broken by war. This set portrays the atmosphere of a Confederate field hospital between 1861 and 1865 — a world of pain, duty and desperate care behind the front.
