ENGLISH The American Civil War transformed the lives of millions of African Americans, both enslaved and free. As Union armies advanced through the South, thousands escaped slavery, sought refuge behind Union lines and established new lives in camps, towns and liberated communities. Men, women and children worked as labourers, cooks, nurses, laundresses, guides and tradespeople, while families struggled with displacement, poverty and the uncertainty of war. For many, the conflict also brought the first real possibility of freedom, culminating in emancipation and the abolition of slavery. This set portrays African American civilians living through one of the greatest social upheavals in United States history.
