ENGLISH During the Prohibition era, Chicago became the setting for one of the most famous criminal empires in American history. At its centre stood Al Capone, a Brooklyn-born gangster of Italian immigrant descent who built his power through illegal alcohol, gambling, racketeering and corruption. By the late 1920s, Capone had become both feared and celebrated by the press, while violent rivalry between Chicago gangs turned the city into a symbol of organised crime. Despite his reputation, it was not murder or bootlegging that finally brought him down, but tax evasion. Convicted in 1931, Capone became one of the most enduring icons of the gangster era. ITALIANO Durante il periodo del Proibizionismo, Chicago divenne il teatro di uno degli imperi criminali più famosi della storia americana. Al centro di questo mondo c’era Al Capone, gangster nato a Brooklyn da una famiglia di immigrati italiani, che costruì il proprio potere attraverso il traffico illegale di alcolici, il gioco d’azzardo, il racket e la corruzione. Alla fine degli anni Venti, Capone era ormai temuto e celebrato dalla stampa, mentre la violenta rivalità tra le bande di Chicago trasformava la città in un simbolo del crimine organizzato. Non furono però gli omicidi o il contrabbando a provocarne la caduta, bensì l’evasione fiscale. Condannato nel 1931, Capone divenne una delle figure più iconiche dell’epoca dei gangster.
