ENGLISH

American prisons of the 1940s were rigid, disciplined institutions built around confinement, routine and labour. Convicts lived under strict schedules, working in prison workshops, kitchens, farms and maintenance crews while guards controlled every movement within the cell blocks and yards.

Prison clothing varied from one institution to another, ranging from plain work garments to numbered uniforms, while daily life was shaped by isolation, hard labour and the constant authority of the prison system.

This set portrays the inmates of an American prison in the 1940s — men caught within one of the most controlled and unforgiving environments of the era.
