ENGLISH

In medieval Europe, monks were among the most visible figures of religious life. Living in monasteries governed by prayer, work and discipline, they copied manuscripts, cultivated land, cared for the poor, taught the young and preserved much of the learning that survived from the ancient world.

Far from the battlefield, their daily lives were shaped by silence, devotion, study and the regular rhythm of monastic life. Yet monasteries were also places of influence, wealth and authority within medieval society.

This set portrays the men of the cloister — figures of faith, labour and learning at the heart of medieval civilisation.

LATINE

In Europa mediaevali, monachi inter maxime conspicuas figuras vitae religiosa erant. In monasteriis habitantes, precatione, labore atque disciplina regebantur; codices scribebant, agros colebant, pauperibus subveniebant, iuvenes docebant atque multam doctrinam ex antiquo mundo servabant.

Longe a proeliis, vita eorum silentio, pietate, studio et ordine cotidianae vitae monasticae formabatur. Tamen monasteria etiam loca auctoritatis, divitiarum et momenti in societate mediaevali erant.

Haec series viros claustri repraesentat — figuras fidei, laboris et doctrinae in ipso corde civilizationis mediaevalis.
