ENGLISH The American Civil War transformed civilian life across the United States. Between 1861 and 1865, families were separated, farms and towns were drawn into the fighting, trade was disrupted and entire communities were forced to adapt to shortages, military occupation and constant uncertainty. Women, children, farmers, labourers, merchants and refugees all experienced the conflict in different ways. In many regions, civilians lived only a few miles from battlefields, hospitals and military camps, while others faced displacement, destruction or the loss of relatives serving in the armies. This set portrays the ordinary people whose daily lives were deeply changed by the American Civil War.
