ENGLISH From the opening offensives of 1941–42 to the desperate defensive battles of the final years of the Pacific War, Japanese infantry formed the backbone of the Imperial Japanese Army. Fighting across jungles, mountains, islands and ruined cities, these soldiers became known for endurance, strict discipline and their ability to continue operating under extreme conditions. Armed with rifles, light machine guns, grenades and bayonets, Japanese infantrymen fought in China, Southeast Asia, the Pacific islands and the home-defence preparations of 1945. As the war turned against Japan, they were increasingly drawn into attritional battles marked by isolation, shortages and fierce resistance.
